ASTM A656/A656M A656 Type 3 Grade 50 Material Mechanical Properties

Tensile strength is the maximum stress that can be applied to a material before it yields or breaks. It is also an indication of a material's ductility; the higher the tensile strength, the more ductile a material is considered to be. The minimum specified tensile strength for ASTM A656/A656M A656 Type 3 Grade 50 steel is 150 ksi. This yields the material with excellent formability and makes it suitable for applications subject to high stress levels.

ASTM A656/A656M A656 Type 3 Grade 50 Material Machining Technology

When machining ASTM A656/A656M A656 Type 3 Grade 50 steel, the tool selection and cutting parameters must be carefully selected and optimized in order to get the desired result. Carbide and high speed steel tool materials are the most common materials used in machining ASTM A656/A656M A656 Type 3 Grade 50 steel. However, powder metallurgy high speed steel and CBN/cermet inserts, coated with an AlCrN coating, are also suitable for machining applications. When using carbide and high speed steel cutting tools, two flute and high helix angle tools should be used, as they are more efficient than one flute tools. Additionally, positive rake geometry and a chamfer can provide better chip control and a better finish.
